Instrument introduction

This device is a set of soil moisture monitoring system composed of a handheld collector and a compaction sensor. It has the advantages of simple operation, easy to carry, rapid and reliable detection, etc., which is unique in the field. The handheld collector can be configured with GPS, GPRS data upload and other functions according to user needs. The data in the device can also be connected to the computer via a USB data cable, and the historical data can be exported to the computer for data analysis.

Soil compaction is also called soil hardness or soil firmness or soil penetration resistance. It is generally expressed by the resistance when a metal plunger or probe is pressed into the soil (in Pa). Soil compaction refers to the ability of soil to resist compaction and crushing by external forces, which is one of the aspects of soil properties. In addition, soil physical properties include soil texture, structure, porosity, etc., involving soil firmness, plasticity, permeability, drainage, water storage capacity, and difficulty of root penetration.

Soil compactness is composed of soil shear resistance, compression force and friction force. It is a composite indicator of soil strength. There are two methods for pressing a metal plunger or probe into the soil: dynamic load and static load. The measured values of different methods are different, but they are related. The shapes of the plunger include cone, flat head, sphere and wedge, which also affect the measured values. The measured values of the same method are mainly determined by soil texture, bulk density and water content. Among them, water content has the greatest impact. Soil compactness can predict soil bearing capacity, tillage and resistance to root extension. The degree of soil compactness can affect the perforation and growth of crop roots. It is an important soil physical property indicator used to evaluate soil tillage. Compacted soil can prevent water infiltration, reduce the utilization rate of fertilizers, affect plant root growth, and lead to crop yield reduction.
